Anxiety
Anxiety and panic attacks are unpleasant states of inner turmoil, almost like our mind is on the fast spin cycle and we may feel like we are losing control.
It is important to note that anyone can get nervous at times. From taking tests and exams, to public speaking, interviews, or for musicians experiencing performance anxiety which can be crippling.
Social anxiety can be extremely hard to manage – we may struggle to find the right words to talk to others. Perhaps – for no reason that we can think of – we start to get anxious. That feeling of our palms getting hot, our heart racing and the adrenaline kicks in – and we can’t stop it. We need to manage it but don’t know how.
We are actually hard wired to be anxious – we would have died out as a species otherwise!
Some anxiety keeps us from becoming complacent; if we were completely relaxed our performance would be below par, but there can be times when it stops us from functioning, leading us to want to withdraw to feel safe.
When this is a regular occurrence and the feeling overtakes us, our anxiety needs to be managed more appropriately which is where I can help.
It’s important also to realise that it isn’t just our emotional / mental process that will drive our responses but also to know about the gut / brain connection. If – over many years – your nutrition has been below par or you’ve had to take different kinds of medication, your microbiome will be altered and *can* lead to emotional and mental issues including depression, anxiety and more. Taking a good probiotic can help, and just being mindful of what you eat on a daily basis. Remember that your gut is your second brain!
Not all stress is bad for you; after all a degree of stress helps you work to maximum performance!
And anyone can get nervous at times when significant events loom. From tests to exams, public speaking, interviews, or for musicians experiencing performance anxiety. In fact we are actually hard wired to have anxiety!
Social anxiety may manifest in your struggle to find the right words to talk to people. Or a significant event may have happened and for no obvious reason you feel anxious to the point of feeling frozen to the spot.
Stress can paralyse us – that feeling of our palms getting hot, our heart racing and adrenaline kicks in – and we have no idea how to channel that adrenaline effectively. We are in “fight or flight” mode.
Chronic stress can lead to health issues if left untreated which may include:
- Depression and anxiety
- Pain
- Sleep problems
- Autoimmune diseases
- Digestive problems
- Skin conditions, such as eczema
- Heart disease
- Weight problems
- Reproductive issues
- Thinking and memory problems
Anxiety can feel like we are on a fast spin cycle in our heads and we may feel like we are losing control.

Important Reminder:
If you present with Anxiety / Panic Attacks please ensure you have first consulted with your GP. Several medical conditions can cause anxiety and panic attacks which can include:
- Mitral Valve Prolapse
- Cushings Disease
- Hyperthyroidism
- Anaemia
- Vitamin Deficiency(esp D3, B6 & B12)
- Pituitary gland tumours
- Adrenal Cancer
There are other, rarer conditions as well. This is not to alarm, rather serve as a reminder that if your anxiety / panic has an underlying condition, it is important to either rule this out with your GP or ensure you are receiving the appropriate medical support for your condition.
Where the issues concern fear of insects etc., phobias and other fears of certain situations such as driving, stage / exam performance, in general these can be safely worked on. If you have any queries please just ask!
